The main-components method of the mathematical theory of experiment is used to investigate whether optically variable quasars are physically homogeneous, similar objects or can be grouped in terms of physical properties. Fifty-seven such quasars are classified into four groups on the basis of the difference between maximum and minimum light, the U-B color index, and the B-V color index. In addition, three of the groups are subdivided into several arrays on the basis of fine-structure differences. It is concluded that the optically variable quasars are not homogeneous in their physical nature and can be divided into at least four groups that may be further subdivided into several arrays each.
