The results show that image data characterised by high pixel depths (14-16 bits), large sizes and requirements for sophisticated image processing cannot be coded using usual methods based on subjective evaluations (e.g. JPEG). The study evaluates suitability of different integral transforms for scientific image data coding. The Karhunen-Loève transform (KLT) has been introduced. It fully decorrelates image data with respect to minimisation of mean square error. As shown, the KLT, contrary to the Hadamard and DCT transforms, is more competent for accurate photometric measurements. A convenient coding algorithm of the discrete KLT (DKLT) is presented and analyses of the DKLT parameters have been conducted.
