The quaternion method involving the Rodrigues-Hamilton parameters is compared with the directing-cosine method in terms of computational costs and the convenience of machine realization. It is shown that the quaternion method is almost twice as cost-effective. Quaternions are thus recommended as the most convenient kinematic parameters not only for solving problems of attitude control in space but also for the numerical analysis of rigid-body dynamics in the atmosphere. The use of the quaternion formalism in the kinematic equations also facilitates simulation.
