We've shown in the past the power of using model Point Spread Functions (PSFs) to identify unresolved binary systems in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. The program and techniques first developed to identify binary Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) are now being used to find other possible binary systems in the HST archives. In particular, we have started looking for binary brown dwarf systems in archival HST data, and have found evidence of at least two previously unknown binary systems of the twelve objects examined so far.
In this poster we present the technique used to identify an unresolved binary system using model PSFs for the NICMOS instrument on HST. We give examples of how this program has been used to find binary KBOs in the past and our current work to find binary brown dwarf systems. This program can be applied to any NICMOS HST image where there is a desire to identify or cleanly remove unresolved point sources.
This work was supported by HST grant 11238.
