In the present paper, an attempt is made to use the method of principal components to classify pulsars into groups according to their physical parameters. Geometrically, the determination of the principal components reduces to resolution to a new system of orthogonal coordinates: the first coordinate is defined such that maximum dispersion may be extracted from the corresponding linear form; then, an axis orthogonal to this coordinate is sought, and the remaining dispersion is treated in the same way, etc. It is shown that the 32 pulsars examined may be broken down into 9 clusters in which, in turn, specific 'chains' along which the pulsar characteristics vary may be identified.
