The authors describe a complete pattern recognition procedure for extracting and tracking magnetic features in solar images, using a multi-scale elastic matching. This procedure allows one to derive rotational and meridional motions with unequalled accuracy. Furthermore, using multispectral images, 3-d structures are obtained that provide additional constraints on the temporal evolution.
