The appearance of interplanetary shock waves near the earth following 10 series of powerful solar flares is studied. The flares were observed during the years 1957-1978 near the point of the earth's projection onto the sun. On the basis of a deficit in the number of shock waves relative to the number of flares, and the structure and intensity of interplanetary MHD disturbances, it is proposed that the shock waves are strongly dissipated because of interactions in complex interplanetary flows.
