A semiautomatic grain-size separator to handle neutron-irradiated samples of lunar soil is described. The device is capable of separating small samples (50-500 mg) of granular material into several uniform grain-size fractions; the separations are reproducible and are faster than those obtained with hand-sieving techniques. In addition, the device limits the amount of radiation from highly radioactive materials, keeping dosages to the operator at acceptably low levels.
