The theoretical principles underlying the synthetic-aperture technique are presented with reference to the use of this technique in radio astronomy. Attention is given to image distortion due to the imperfect coverage of the U. V plane; and to the problem of calibration in VLBI. Methods for the reconstruction of the source-brightness distribution in VLBI are examined, including the method of model aproximations, the method of closed phases, the method of closed amplitudes, and the construction of images of line-emitting sources (masers).
