The problem of building large-diameter astronomical telescopes using aperture synthesis methods is examined. Telescopes having a sectional main mirror, the synthesis of partially filled apertures, and methods for adjusting and phasing them are described. The limitations associated with atmospheric turbulence and possible ways of reducing their influence through the use of nonredundant aperture synthesis systems are indicated.
