Modern telescopes and interferometers of any wave range (from radio up to gamma) are often multi-element systems. When synthesizing such instruments, the basic problem is to arrange optimally their elements to fit requirements such as the most complete coverage of the spatial-frequency domain (for interferometers), the possibility of exact restoration of the brightness distribution of the object investigated when the destroying influence of the propagation medium is appreciable, maximum sensitivity, etc. It is shown how various multi-element systems can be optimized by using the mathematical methods of combinatorial analysis or number theory.
