Tides induced by atmospheric heating have been calculated using ozone measurements from Nimbus 4. While the conditions for ozone heating to produce antisymmetric tidal modes might be expected to be less favorable near the equinoxes, the results show that the ozone distribution is then sufficiently asymmetric about the equator to produce a significant amplitude. Comparison of the results with temperature variations measured in the lower thermosphere at three radar stations show good agreement.
