The present chopper is designed for use in or near the focal plane of an optical telescope adapted for IR photometry. The principle of focal-plane chopping is outlined, and the basic design characteristics of the chopper are described, including the coil-cylinder assembly, the suspension system, and the electronic system. The modulation function is discussed along with storage of the computer-calculated input signal in a programmable read-only memory. Some applications of the device are reviewed, and it is noted that the chopper generates no audible noise or mechanically induced detector signals.
