Counting rate data for 2.4-19.8 keV photons observed by the Ariel V satellite during January 1975 from Her X-1 are reported. An anomalous emission was recorded approximately 16.5 days before the turn on of the source (i.e., during its off state). This observation places a constraint on the mass transfer (from primary star to compact companion) and eclipsing models previously proposed to account for the radiation emitted by Her X-1.
