I HAVE recently described1 the phenomenal appearance in the seas off western Europe of a tidal component with a period of exactly one mean lunar day, namely the ``M1 tide''. Although only a few mm in amplitude, it is about ten times larger than one would expect from comparison with ordinary diurnal tides, and suggests a resonant response of part of the Atlantic Ocean to forcing functions which are symmetrical with respect to the Equator. The forcing function for the ordinary diurnal tides is antisymmetric, and its components are relatively suppressed, enhancing the appearance of M1 in this sea area.
