The long-term variation of cosmic ray anisotropies, particularly during the period of the declining phase of solar activity, has been studied both on a monthly average basis as well as on a day-to-day basis by using hourly data of neutron monitors situated at different latitudes. Continuous periods have been noted where the monthly mean values of the amplitude and/or phase of the diurnal variation is significantly different as compared to that of the annual average values during 1971-77. Detailed analysis during two such periods of low diurnal amplitude, viz. July-September 1976 and February-March 1977 yield distinctly different characteristics on a day-to-day basis. The available synoptic values of interplanetary field and plasma, being similar, are inconsistent with these observations. It is, therefore, suggested that detailed analysis of the anisotropy on a day-to-day basis is very necessary before drawing any conclusion on the basis of average values of the anisotropy of cosmic rays.
