Anomalous Accretion Event Observed in DQ Tau System
We present evidence for an accretion outburst at apastron from DQ Tau, a high eccentricity young spectroscopic binary system. Previous optical spectroscopic observations of the DQ Tau system have determined a well-constrained orbital period of 15.803 days. Semi-regular outbursts have been observed to occur near periastron and are likely associated with pulsed accretion from the circumbinary disk and/or the interaction of the stellar magnetospheres. We conducted a low resolution near-infrared spectroscopic survey (0.8-2.5 µm) of DQ Tau with sporadic observations acquired over a four-year period. In these spectra, which randomly cover the full orbital phase of the binary, outbursts are indicated by the strengthening of the Ca II infrared triplet, H I Paschen and Brackett series lines, and He I 1.083 µm. Similar to those previously observed, most of the outbursts were centered on periastron, with the exception of one event centered near apastron. We discuss the implications of this outburst for pulsed accretion models and for the amount of material residing within the cleared gap between the stars and circumbinary disk.
