INVESTIGATING the absorption of the vertical component of cosmic radiation in lead by means of a Geiger-Müller counter-telescope, George and Appapillai1 found in 1945 at sea-level (London and Colombo) that the absorption curve showed a plateau at about 10 cm. absorber thickness. Repeating the experiment in Budapest, we eliminated barometric and temperature effects (this proved to be important) by simultaneously measuring two consecutive points on the absorption curve. We found a second anomaly between 20 and 30 cm. of lead, besides that mentioned by George and Appapillai.
