It is shown that the separation of angular variables occurs for the diffusion of radiation in an optically thick inhomogeneous atmosphere. Equations are obtained which relate the solution of the Milne problem to the diffuse-reflection problem. The cases of an almost conservatively scattering atmosphere and of an atmosphere lying above a light-reflecting surface are examined separately. The approach presented here markedly simplifies both the numerical solution of the transfer equation for a semiinfinite medium and the determination of the reflection and transmission coefficients of an optically thick layer.
