The hose-pipe instability of gravitating systems has been studied by Mark (1970) and by Kulsrud and Mark (1971), using the model of an infinite nonrotating slab uniform in the x and y directions. In the present paper, the analysis is extended to rotating stellar disk of finite radius. A simplified derivation of the Mark and Kulsrud dispersion relation is given for an infinite slab. First, the spectrum of 'membrane' vibrations is obtained for a two-dimensional 'hydrodynamic' model of the disk. It is then shown that essentially the same relations should hold for an analogous 'collisionless' disk with an isotropic distribution with respect to peculiar velocities. A hypothesis according to which hose-pipe instability plays an important part in the deflection of the galactic plane is examined.
