It is common practice to use PowerPoint presentations as the primary method of lecturing. PowerPoint has a number of useful features that can aid in the delivery of lesson material, the most common being the animation of PowerPoint slides. While anecdotal evidence suggests that PowerPoint animations aid in the presentation of lesson material, does it aid in student learning, or is it simply a distraction to the students? A recent study of an Introductory Management of Information Systems class (Mahar et al. 2009) suggests that the latter may be the case, but the authors acknowledge that their results may be subject dependent. We will discuss preliminary results of a study to determine if the inclusion of basic animation techniques provides an additional learning aid to students in an introductory astronomy course, or if in fact it inhibits learning.
We will present our analysis of data obtained from two sections of our introductory Stars & Galaxies course. The material in both classes was alternately introduced via PowerPoint either with or without animations (in this case, "animated" refers to material being incrementally presented one line at a time on a slide, as opposed to everything appearing all at once.). We will address not only a comparison of the level of student understanding achieved via both methods of instruction, but also student perception of the usefulness of the animations. We will also discuss further plans to investigate the effect of more advanced animations, such as the animation of figures in order to convey motion or progression.
