We request 2 nights on the WIYN telescope to map the stellar kinematics in a sample of early-type galaxies for which cold gas (HI and CO) kinematics have already been obtained. A comparison of stellar and gas kinematics will test whether the cold gas was produced internally or acquired in interactions or mergers, thus giving insight into the past interaction history of the galaxies and the thermal evolution of their interstellar media. If the angular momentum of the gas is inconsistent with that of the stars, an internal origin can be ruled out. To date, this test has only been made for a very small number of ellipticals with cold gas. We now assemble a larger sample with which to measure the rate of gas-stellar kinematic misalignments. Our immediate goal is to find whether the incidence of misalignments is near half or much less. The SparsePak instrument offers full two-dimensional coverage and the ideal field of view to allow us to characterize the angular momentum of stars within an effective radius.
