Prognoz-7 crossed the magnetopause at the front part of the magnetotail at 14.05:33 during the commencement phase of the substorm of March 22, 1979. The magnetopause had the form of a strong discontinuity with a normal component of about 20 nTl which was at a very large angle of attack (about 35 deg) to the solar wind. These results serve to confirm the hypothesis that, during the substorm commecement phase, there is an increase in the dynamic pressure on the magnetotail due to an angle-of-attack increase determined by the magnetic-flux transfer from the day to the night side.
