The Advanced Nuclear Gamma-ray Analysis System (ANGAS) is spaceborne, high resolution gamma-ray spectrometer which incorporates a rotational aperture synthesis imaging system. The primary sensor array comprises 19 large, cryogenically cooled, high purity n-type Ge detectors sensitive to gamma-rays from about 20 keV to 10 MeV. These sensors are surrounded by a massive NaI(Tl) shield that provides Compton and external background suppression and serves independently as a large omni-directional spectrometer with medium resolution. Holes drilled through the top of the shield define a 15° FWHM field-of-view for the Ge sensors. An angular resolution of about 1.2° FWHM is obtained by the imaging system. The instrument will be flow in low earth orbit on the P86-2 USAF satellite in early 1991 and is designed to operated in space for 3.4 years. A brief description of the instrument and its sensitivity to cosmic gamma-ray sources is presented.
