I withdraw my earlier proposal that the Alm 7.3 discussion of stars' declination precession is convincing evidence for ancient use of a simple formula of differential calculus. I thank Hugh Thurston for bringing to my attention Karl Manitius' longer but historically well-based 1913 non-calculus method, using polar longitudes. This is sufficient to explain Ptolemy's data. It should be noted that these data are more consistent with Hipparchos' epoch and approach than Ptolemy's, providing further suggestion that Hipparchos possessed spherical trig. Also, by either Manitius' or the speculative interpretation, the anciently reported east-west coordinates are knowledgably related to the equatorial frame. In sum: ancient use of differentiation remains an intriguing speculation; but I must go with the conservative position, regarding it as unproved. A more detailed analysis of this question will appear in an upcoming issue of DIO \@.
