We request joint observations with XMM (210ksec) and Chandra (88ksec) of the newly discovered cluster XMMUJ1007+1237 at z=1.56 to set the first anchor point of accurately determined properties of the ICM at z>1.5. These observations will have the largest leverage to empirically calibrate the high-z evolution of scaling relations (L-T, M-L, M-T). We pursue an optimized strategy, combining 1500 source photons from XMM with shorter Chandra data to resolve the compact core and remove point sources. This will allow the determination of the global Lx to 5%, Tx to 10%, and to obtain a mass estimate to 20%. Furthermore, the data will enable the first metallicity constraints at 9.4Gyr lookback time, a characterization of the ICM core properties, and measurements of Mgas and fgas.
