A mathematical formalism of the doublet-ratio (DR) method for analyzing errors in the Ly-alpha forest data is described. The method is based on the following property of an equivalent width (W): the width of a single isolated absorption line does not depend sensitively on the spectral resolution. In the spectrum of SBS 0953 + 549, 181 absorption lines ranging from 3400 to 4346 A were identified. The mean number density of the absorption lines with W not less than 0.4 A shortward of the Ly-beta emission line is about 1.4 times higher than in the region between the Ly-alpha and Ly-beta emissions, suggesting that some of the former lines are the Ly-beta absorption lines. It is shown that the distribution of Ly-alpha forest intervals can be described by the Poisson model with a constant interval density parameter of about 0.118/A. No positive evidence is found for the existence of clusters or voids in the Ly-alpha forest.
