Collimated and magnetized nonrotating astrophysical outflows from a central gravitating body are studied by means of an analytical class of exact solutions of the steady axisymmetric MHD equations. It is shown that if the field and streamlines deviate from radiality on the meridional plane, converging toward the direction of the magnetic and flow axis, the flow can reach large terminal speeds only for equatorially enhanced density distributions. However, such highly collimated outflows require an unreasonably large amount of heating if they are not rotating. This result is also applicable to the inner part of rotating MHD winds, at distances smaller than the Alfven radius. It is then concluded that if such strong heating is not available, the toroidal components of the field and flow are necessary in order to accelerate well collimated MHD winds and jets.
