In the context of non thermal hard X-ray models, the temporal evolution of the instantaneous X-ray spectrum is related to the temporal evolution of the non thermal electron distribution function in the source. As a necessary preliminary to detailed source modelling, the authors present here time dependent solutions of the electron continuity equation. This equation describes the temporal and spatial evolution of an electron population continuously injected during a finite time and over a finite extent in a stationary and inhomogeneous medium. The solutions obtained for some simple situations are examined and compared to previous results. Potential applications to solar hard X-ray observations are discussed.
