Simmons (1982) has generalized work reported by Brown and McLean (1977) on Thomson scattering around single stars and derived useful expressions for the polarization produced by arbitrary spherically symmetric scattering mechanisms in optically thin envelopes of arbitrary configuration. In the present investigation, the techniques developed by Simmons are used to derive general expressions for the variable polarization in the binary case. The obtained expressions generalize the results of Brown et al. (1978) for Thomson scattering. Applications of the results are also discussed, taking into account an axisymmetric distribution, Thomson and Rayleigh scattering, and Mie scattering in cool binary envelopes.
