A method is described for deriving analytic neutron star models in general relativity which are exact solutions of the Einstein field equations. The field equations for a static body are reduced to one first-order linear differential equation by assuming some form for the metric coefficients and finding the equation of state which induced this form. It is shown that the resulting equation can always be reduced to quadratures, and equations describing rotational properties are discussed. Two exact solutions are obtained using this method, and the results are applied to calculate the mass, radius, redshift, and 'moment of inertia' of a fluid body whose equation of state is the same as that calculated by Bethe and Johnson (1973).
