Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) are applied to eight clusters of galaxies, in which unseen matter is also believed to be present in large amounts, and where the gravitational field causes accelerations just in the range of values where MOND is applicable. The dynamical mass estimated with MOND is found to be about 10 times smaller than the dynamical mass computed in the 'normal' Newtonian theory. In some clusters it is even smaller than the mass of X-ray emitting gas, a result of which appears to rule out MOND. The dynamical mass estimated with MOND is mainly distributed in the center of clusters, while the ICM and luminous matter are more extended. The observational data cannot be accounted for by MOND without the presence of large amounts of unseen matter.
