We give an explanation for the cause of the asymmetry of spectral lines of solar oscillation power spectrum. We also explain the cause of the opposite sense of asymmetry in velocity and intensity oscillation power spectra, thereby resolving a half-decade old puzzle. The motivation for the investigation came after comparing the velocity and intensity data obtained from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) instrument on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The analysis is based on a theoretical model of wave excitation with viscous damping in conjunction with a spherically symmetric solar model. Neglecting asymmetry can lead to systematic errors in the eigenfrequency measurements, which in turn leads to errors in inversion. This research was supported by NASA grant NAG5-3077 at Stanford University.
