An analysis is presented of the effect of unsteady nonadiabatic heat sources (anomalies in deviations from the annual cycle) on anomalies of the planetary baroclinity of the atmosphere. The analysis employs the basic and adjoint hydrothermodynamic equations of the atmosphere, and both direct and inverse methods are used. It is shown that the adjoint equations can be effectively used to analyze unsteady atmospheric processes with a characteristic time of the order of one week and a horizontal scale equal to a continent.
