Data are presented on the correlation between the muon and electron spatial distribution functions in extensive air showers. The muon spatial distribution function is obtained and used to determine the dependence of the number of muons on the number of electrons and to compute the dispersion in the distribution of the number of muons for a specified number of electrons. The experimental data are compared with calculations performed in the framework of a scaling model on the assumption that primary cosmic rays consist of protons. It is shown that such calculations are in sharp disagreement with the experimental data and that the disagreement becomes even worse if the primary cosmic rays are assumed to consist of heavy nuclei.
