The contributions of different components to the radiation background in a proportional-counter X-ray telescope are examined; experimental data are examined which encompass X-ray measurements in the 0.2-2 keV and 2-10 keV energy ranges. Attention is given to the contributions of the diffuse X-ray background, the cosmic ray background, bremsstrahlung, and nonrelativistic electrons.
