We present limits on the equation of state of the dark energy,w, from an analysis of the 6 year data from the ESSENCE Supernova Survey. ESSENCE has observed 228 spectroscopically confirmed type Ia supernovae (SNIa) using the CTIO 4m telescope out to moderate redshifts (z 0.5 +- 0.2). We present lightcurves and a Hubble diagram for the full six year sample combined with complementary SNIa measurements from the CfA3 sample, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-II, the Supernova Legacy Survey and Higher-z. We combine our results with measurements from baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) to constrain the matter-energy budget of the universe. We assume a flat LCDM cosmology to place tighter constraints on the equation of state of the dark energy. We improve our treatment of dust in the host galaxies and intrinsic color of the SNIa, and examine other sources of systematic uncertainty. Finally, we examine various non-standard cosmologies with information criterion to assess the relative merits of these models.
