We present dynamical changes found within Jovian Oval BA using a novel method of streamline analysis of spacecraft imagery. We present wind speed and vorticity results for both 2001 pre-reddened Cassini flyby data as well as 2007 post-reddened New Horizons flyby data. We derive streamlines throughout the oval by first applying an automated cross covariance cloud registration algorithm across an image pair to track cloud features both forward and backward in time for each image pixel. We then apply the results of this algorithm iteratively to generate streamlines from a single pixel. To recover wind speeds along streamlines, we generate only partial streamline arcs. We then compare data numbers underlying these arcs from both images within a pair, determining the shift in kilometer space which produces the maximum cross covariance value between data numbers in each image. This data number shift is interpreted as the distance traversed by cloud features along the streamline during the image pair sequence. To determine vorticity, we use full streamlines and calculate their circulation and enclosed area. Using Stokes' theorem, these two quantities are used to produce the averaged interior vorticity.
We find noticeable changes in streamline shape between pre- and post-reddening eras, transitioning from a peaked structure in Cassini data to a more elliptical shape in the New Horizons data. We also find differences in both the northern and southern maxima of wind speeds between these eras, but only the northern maximum is significant beyond our measurement uncertainty. Finally, we find a considerable increase in averaged interior vorticity for the post-reddened era over most of the oval. These results may suggest a dynamical correlation with the reddening of Oval BA.
