The cometary lander RoLand under construction for ESA's cornerstone mission ROSETTA includes instrumentation able to separate enantiomers of chiral organic molecules in situ on the surface and low subsurface of comet 46P/Wirtanen. With the help of enantioselective gas-chromatography on chiral stationary phases followed by thermo conductivity and mass spectrometric detection units, racemic pairs of non-complex alcohols, amines, diols, hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, and amino acids could be separated into their enantiomers (i.e. mirror image isomers) in order to quantify the enantiomers and to determine their enantiomeric excesses. The COSAC experiments will be performed in August 2012; the results will be transmitted to Earth. The determination of enantiomeric excesses in different classes of chiral organic molecules of cometary matter is assumed to provide new insights in the understanding of the generation of prebiotic organic molecules and the origin of biomolecular asymmetry. The COSAC experiment will be briefly described by this article, for further information we refer to the original literature.
