An algorithm for the determination of the shape of digitized photographic images is described by J. Stock and A. Morales in another paper presented at this meeting. In this paper the same algorithm is tested for its centering capacity. By placing a photographic plate in a plate scanner several times, each time changing the orientation of the plate and every time scanning the same images several sets of coordinates can be obtained when a given centering algorithm is applied. The resulting different sets of coordinates coming from the same plate and images, should be interrelated by strict orthogonal transformations. An analysis of the residuals yields information on the performance of the plate scanner as well as of the centering algorithm. A comparison is also made between two different centering algorithms.
