Several factors which limit selection of reliable information from observations of H I 21-cm self-absorption lines are examined. It is noted that (1) strong correlation of the spin temperature T(s) and optical depth tau make them separately indeterminate, (2) the observational noise and/or spatial fluctuations in the H I emission background strongly limit the precision to which the T(s), tau combination can be specified, and (3) gradients in the background H I emission result in systematic shifts of the observed velocity. Empirical formulas are presented for correcting the H I self-absorption features for the velocity effects; the practical evidence of various limiting factors is illustrated by observations of H I self-absorption lines and CO emission lines in nearby clouds.
