The authors have investigated the X-ray luminosity distribution function for late-type giants from ROSAT observations of all nearby (d < 25 pc) G-M giants. Essentially all giants with B-V < 1.2 are X-ray sources with luminosities of some 1027erg s-1, few giants are more X-ray luminous. There is evidence for a minimum X-ray surface flux of the order of ≡100 erg cm-2s-1, which seems to be independent of B-V and is probably not related to pure acoustic heating.
