IXOs are the most X-ray luminous (non-AGN) population present in nearby galaxies, with observed luminosities in the range 1039 - 1041 erg s-1. Though recent studies have revealed that many examples show the characteristics of black hole candidate systems, the exact nature of the sources and the overall demographics of this source class are far from clear. We have therefore obtained both Chandra ACIS-S and WHT/INTEGRAL data for a subset of these sources to study their nature and their galactic environments in greater detail. We present the initial results of this programme here.
