Echelle spectra of the high-redshift quasar Q0420-388 (z = 3.12) have been used to obtain velocity dispersions and H I column densities for a large number of the Lyman line-absorbing clouds. Most systems have column densities quite near the detection limit of about 5×1013 H I atoms cm-2, and systems with column densities above 1015 cm-2 are very rare. The authors have found no Lyman forest clouds for which the deuterium to hydrogen ratio could be measured unless it were to have a cosmologically implausible value of >10-2.
