Design features and sample results are described from use of the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) astronomy satellite, which has functioned for over 9 yr in GEO. The reflecting mirror telescope is 45 cm in diameter and can detect quasars of 16 mag brightness. Sensitivity is in the range 115-320 nanometers. The IUE has collected spectra on cometary gases and dust, stellar winds, hot stars in the Magellanic Clouds, and Seyfert galaxies. Sample spectra, and the implications for the understanding of various astrophysical phenomena, are discussed.
