One of the recognized priorities for a National Underground Science Laboratory (NUSL) will be the construction of a state-of-the-art low background counting facility. The purpose of the facility will be first to screen materials for a number of projects planned for NUSL including solar neutrino, double beta decay, and dark matter experiments. This would require detection sensitivities several orders of magnitude better than presently available with existing low background counting systems. Another potential use would be to prototype future detector technologies for the above NUSL projects. A detailed discussion of the possible uses and designs of such a facility, along with the projected counting sensitivies, will be given.
