We present preliminary results of a search for Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) in the SDSS Data Release 4 (DR4) footprint, and the target selection methods employed to search for them. We discuss an empirical color selection algorithm based on a sample of known PNe in the Kerber et al. catalogue (2003) that lie within the SDSS DR4 area. The original 14 objects in the sample were supplemented with observations of other known PNe using the SDSS Photometric Telescope. We also analyze contamination of the color-space by other objects, and propose methods to increase the PNe detection efficiency, as well as discuss our plans to extend the PNe survey to lower Galactic latitudes using data from SDSS-II (SEGUE).
