A carbon star in the central bulge of the Galaxy is shown to be of late R type, with strong C-13 features. The latter distinguish it from the typical carbon stars of the upper AGB in Magellanic Cloud clusters of intermediate age, in accordance with the absence of bright carbon stars in the Baade Window fields and the difficulty of producing carbon stars by the helium shell flash route in metal-rich stars of low mass. Unusually strong Na D 5890, 5896 lines support the supposition that it is metal-rich.
