Several campaigns have been performed during the arctic winter 2002/03 to measure atmospheric constituents and to validate satellite observations. As a base for the interpretation of these measurements, the large-scale development of the stratospheric circulation will be shown by several relevant parameters such as temperature, geostrophic wind, potential vorticity, planetary wave activity and the resulting heat fluxes. Special emphasis will be placed on the campaign periods. The stratospheric winter 2002/03 will be evaluated within the wide range of interannual variability of the temperature and polar vortex evolution in northern winter and spring by comparing to the long-term record of data from the Stratospheric Research Group Berlin.
