The T Tau/NGC 1555 region has been investigated by CCD imaging and by medium resolution long-slit spectroscopy. The CCD frames show that the Herbig-Haro emission found by Schwartz (1975) near the inner edge of the reflection nebula NGC 1555 is not extended over the whole inner edge of the nebula but mainly originates in a small knot about 4 arcsec in diameter located 32 arcsec west of T Tau. The spectra show that high-velocity blueshifted gas (v/rad/ = -40 to -150 km/s relative to T Tau) is only found near the connecting line between T Tau and this Herbig-Haro knot suggesting that material, possibly in form of a jet, is flowing from one of the stars in the T Tau system towards this knot. The region close to T Tau (Burnham's nebula) was also examined by long-slit spectroscopy. The intensity distribution of the S II 6716 and 6731 A forbidden lines was determined as well as the radial velocity shifts relative to T Tau itself. Possible implications on the geometric and kinematic structure of the outflowing matter from the T Tau system are discussed.
